For Honor and Vengeance

As a child, Thorfinn sat at the feet of the great Leif Ericson and thrilled to wild tales of a land far to the west。 But his youthful fantasies were shattered by a mercenary raid。 Raised by the Vikings who murdered his family, Thorfinn became a terrifying warrior, forever seeking to kill the band's leader, Askeladd, and avenge his father。 Sustaining Throfinn through his ordeal are his pride in his family and his dreams of a fertile westward land, a land without war or slavery。。。the land Leif called Vinland

My favorite manga of all time。

Jenny Reibenspies

This is a wonderfully drawn historically themed graphic novel series。 Great story and interesting, complex characters, good read for Manga and Viking historical fiction enthusiasts。 Graphic wise there is a bit of historically themed bloody battle action and semi-nudity。 Super cool action and worth the read, dazzling!

3。5 starsPromising indeed! This volume is mostly just Thorfinn’s background, and I’m really looking forward to find out what turn the story will take。 Since I’m Scandinavian myself the setting and history is really interesting (can’t speak for accuracy though cause I’ve no idea 😅)。 The art is solid and suits this story well。 Onto the next one!

Fantastic manga! This is a perfect example of Grim Dark with historical elements。 I am positive it will only get better。 I anticipate the next entry。 The world is full of style and the art is fantastic。 It is a long read (400~ pages), but it was a wild ride the whole time。

it’s so good。 I hate it here。 all I know is sadness and the need to protect thorfinn

Oikein mainio viikinkimanga, jonka hahmojen tarina avautuu pikkuhiljaa takaumien ja nykyhetken vuorotellessa。 Sopii Vikings-tv-sarjan (ja viikinkien yleisemminkin) faneille。

I wanted to hate-rate this 1 star because of Thors, but I ultimately couldn't because of the amount of research and work that went into this。 But seriously, fuck Thors。 Also, it's a mishmash of manga humor and a serious viking story, which doesn't go well together, so this was a miss for me。 The 3 stars are for respect but I cannot say I enjoyed this。 I wanted to hate-rate this 1 star because of Thors, but I ultimately couldn't because of the amount of research and work that went into this。 But seriously, fuck Thors。 Also, it's a mishmash of manga humor and a serious viking story, which doesn't go well together, so this was a miss for me。 The 3 stars are for respect but I cannot say I enjoyed this。 。。。more

I found this to be a great book I thought I wasn’t going to like it as much judging from the first chapter I thought it was good but could’ve been better but it really picks up as you go on。 I like all the characters introduced so far the one in particular is Thors I can’t wait to get the next book。

Dale Jones

A solid start to the series。 I like it。

Pretty much exactly like the anime but the only difference is how the manga opens, which is a few episodes into the anime。 I expect the rest of the prologue to be a completely faithful adaptation and I can’t wait to see where the story goes。

Had this book for a while, read it in a day。 Absolutely awesome and worth the hype it gets。

I'm not particularly sold on this。 A whole book dedicated to backstory seems a bit excessive。 I would've much rather had it thrown about, flashback style。 Otherwise, I'm not sure what the goal of this story is other than revenge。 Overall, a 3。5/5。 I'm not particularly sold on this。 A whole book dedicated to backstory seems a bit excessive。 I would've much rather had it thrown about, flashback style。 Otherwise, I'm not sure what the goal of this story is other than revenge。 Overall, a 3。5/5。 。。。more

Doskonałe! Wspaniałe, dynamiczne, porywające rysunki, interesujące postaci z twarzami pełnymi emocji, wciągająca fabuła, autentyczne tło historyczne, pojedynki i bitwy bez epatowania brutalnością。 Polecam każdemu tę pełną wrażeń podróż do świata Wikingów!

I didn’t enjoy this at all! It was FAR too war based for me! Too much battling but there weren’t too many words on the pages so it was quite quick to flick through。 I read it for Polarthon and Reading Rivalry。 IF there’s an anime, I might check it out as I think it would be much better animated!

This art style is out of this world, even if you don't read manga you should give it a look it's amazing。 I also really enjoyed the story。Note this is definitely rated pg13 if not R for violence and gore This art style is out of this world, even if you don't read manga you should give it a look it's amazing。 I also really enjoyed the story。Note this is definitely rated pg13 if not R for violence and gore 。。。more

** 3。5 stars ** I enjoyed the story so far but this felt like more of an introductory volume and the story hasn't really begun yet。 So many people rave about this series and so far, it hasn't quite lived up to the hype yet。 ** 3。5 stars ** I enjoyed the story so far but this felt like more of an introductory volume and the story hasn't really begun yet。 So many people rave about this series and so far, it hasn't quite lived up to the hype yet。 。。。more

This is one of those stories where every single character is extremely unlikable yet the story, drawings, and details are so good you just can't stop reading it。 One thing I love about this series is that it's not one of those that twists some mythological tale into some aesthetic tragic cutesy wootsey love story。 Feels a little more like a history teacher told their students a bunch of fucked up mythology stories and then told the students to make up their very own fictional mythology/vikings s This is one of those stories where every single character is extremely unlikable yet the story, drawings, and details are so good you just can't stop reading it。 One thing I love about this series is that it's not one of those that twists some mythological tale into some aesthetic tragic cutesy wootsey love story。 Feels a little more like a history teacher told their students a bunch of fucked up mythology stories and then told the students to make up their very own fictional mythology/vikings story and one student just happened to go super overboard。Thorfinn lets himself be used as a tool by his enemy, Askeladd, for years and years。 He acts like his only purpose is to get revenge for his fathers death yet he only wants to kill the guy in a fair fight despite the enemy being the most unfair guy ever。 Askeladd will let him challenge him in a duel only if he earns it by basically doing a task or murdering someone for him。 His mother and sister are just waiting at home thinking he's dead。 At no point does Thorfinn ever think about his family that are still alive。 All he cares for is killing the man who killed his father。 He could kill this guy in his sleep or catch him off guard at any point but nope, he wants to be a good ol warrior like his dad。 A majority of the story is just Thorfinn following his enemy around and literally helping him。Askeladd is a selfish asshole who doesn't give a shit about anybody。 He manipulates people into doing whatever he wants and gets whoever he wants killed without a care in the world。 All he cares about is that things go his way and if they don't he always finds another way。Most of the side characters are dummies who let themself be manipulated by Askeladd。 Even after seeing him kill his own comrades in front of them multiple times, some still follow and work for him。What kept me up and reading this was that I just felt like I had to know what the next fucked up thing Askeladd would do and I really wanted to see him dead。 Thorfinn is barely even in half the chapters yet the story just grabs me like I just have to know what goes on next。 Definitely recommend this to anyone whos a fan of norse mythology or vikings in general, but wouldn't say it's for everyone。 Some might find it slow and boring。 。。。more

The historical background is what really hooked me on this series。 In the beginning there is strong violence matching that of Berserk but the storyline picks up in vol 2, with the backstory of the main character。 Fans of historical fiction manga will find this as entertaining as it is educational。

I'm not super into battle scenes, which this volume opened up with。 And I'm not super into Norse/Viking stuff。 Yet this volume had me hooked。 So either I enjoy those things more than I realize, or there's something special about this series。 I also appreciated the humor, so there was a break from the serious atmosphere。 Ylva has superb timing。 Great gal。 Thorfinn is。。。 intense。 He's gonna be an interesting character to follow。 Kinda terrifies me not gonna lie。 This volume also set up the backsto I'm not super into battle scenes, which this volume opened up with。 And I'm not super into Norse/Viking stuff。 Yet this volume had me hooked。 So either I enjoy those things more than I realize, or there's something special about this series。 I also appreciated the humor, so there was a break from the serious atmosphere。 Ylva has superb timing。 Great gal。 Thorfinn is。。。 intense。 He's gonna be an interesting character to follow。 Kinda terrifies me not gonna lie。 This volume also set up the backstory extremely well。 I really feel attached to the characters and their motivations。 Thumbs up all around!poorly written spoilery notes cause I will forget what happened before next volume。。。(view spoiler)[Askeladd killed Thorfinn's dad (Thors Snorresson) and now hes on a ship with him and wants to kill him in a duel and thus agrees to take part in the seige and gathering of spoils from battle on side of Francs(?) What a ride。 One of the best stories I’ve read in a long time。 Can’t wait to see where it ends。

The story and the reference to the medieval Scandinavia are so gripping! Also, the development of the story keeps getting engrossing after each chapter。 So, I'll carry on reading the story until the epilogue! I really liked this。 The story is great。 The art is fantastic。 It is fun to read a historical fiction manga, and I'm really not familiar with viking anything, so this was interesting。 I look forward to Book 2。 I really liked this。 The story is great。 The art is fantastic。 It is fun to read a historical fiction manga, and I'm really not familiar with viking anything, so this was interesting。 I look forward to Book 2。 。。。more

My kids love this book。 It has swears and a guy being shot in the head with an arrow IN THE FIRST FEW PAGES! 😆I really enjoyed it too, it's fantastically well crafted, great characters, good pacing, humour, real stakes。 Great stuff。 This is a high-end Kodansha hardback, but with 450+ pages it's still amazing value for money。Vinland Saga Book 1 by Makoto Yukimura#comicbooks #comics #manga @kodansha_comics My kids love this book。 It has swears and a guy being shot in the head with an arrow IN THE FIRST FEW PAGES! 😆I really enjoyed it too, it's fantastically well crafted, great characters, good pacing, humour, real stakes。 Great stuff。 This is a high-end Kodansha hardback, but with 450+ pages it's still amazing value for money。Vinland Saga Book 1 by Makoto Yukimura#comicbooks #comics #manga @kodansha_comics 。。。more
